"Let's stay together" Al Green

To Peaches,

My love, my heart
My soul, my being

I found myself and the man I want to be whenI found you
I'm blessed everyday that I'm with you.

Love,

"Choice is an illusion between those have power and those who do not." That French guy in the matrix

We learn to sail as early as birth
Even though our paths are walked on earth
You shall crawl, you shall walk
You shall learn to live with your fellow man
This will be side by side but the lines have predrawn in the sand

You are born free
Free to be confined to the rules that tell you how to be
You shall love and be loved
Your stature to be loved lies in the value when your debts and assets are summed
When last did the people love one without asset value but had depth in their heart

We are born with hearts that have depth of love
But we are not born with enough
So we aspire for more
Hence when it comes to money, we can't escape the lure
We raise the stature of people with money
Make them our leaders in hope they'll make our days more sunny

Of course its not easy to divorce one from the demands of society.
Its deeply rooted in our lives like the life blood of a tree
We will be trully free one day
When we learn to look at a man's heart and soul then use that chose the person to lead the way

“And the truth shall set you free”

Today, I stand before all and confess that I am a homophobe! The world is changing fast and it’s getting more and more difficult to keep up. Growing up, there was mom and dad. Hell in fact, there was Black mom and Black dad or White mom and White dad. Today of course, anything is up. There Black dad and White dad raising kids or Indian dad with Nigerian black mom. School governing body meetings are getting interesting. For a while, I’ve always been cool with my homophobia. However, I’ve recently started asking myself some questions. No! Not that question. I’m quite comfortable in my own sexuality.

Currently its quite acceptable to sit with the boys on a Saturday afternoon watching soccer, and when a player makes a stuff up, someone will shout out “You bloody queer!” or something worse. Listening to President Mbeki last week talking about Steve Biko as well as watching the current South African political play unfold, my current anti-gay views started resonating with old day racism. We all know a true measure of a person is a man’s heart and the positive contributions of his actions. Not who he shags (or shagged by). Racism was founded on similar principles back in the day. They are darker than us, so they must dumber than us. Obvious hey. Discrimination followed this where those in majority sought to tell black people, how and where they could live out their lives. All under the protection of our values and culture rule. What got me thinking a lot about this, is when I hear white people today condemn racism. Yet we know that not too long ago, every second white person used the word “Kaffir and boy” interchangeably with black people, their dogs etc. Where all those white people now? Did they disappear, immigrate perhaps? Are they in hiding? No. They are the same people we sit with today and condemn racism. The change in society has helped a lot of people change. People who wouldn’t let their kids hang out with black kids (let alone date), people who wouldn’t associate with black people and all found it acceptable to use certain words.

And those who have not converted are continuously alienating themselves from society and their children. The children of today don’t understand why dad hates people who are darker than him. They go to school with black kids and know that they aren’t all criminals or stupid. And this of course goes visa versa for black oldies. You are not relevant these days if you are openly racist. Shit, if you white and use the “K” word, you run the risk of other white people kicking your ass.

The transition was weird at first, but it became more and more acceptable and then law accelerated things forward and now open racism is not allowed. (Whether subtle racism is dead, is a blog for another day). So, is this where this gay rights situation is going? In that case, I need to transform quickly. To be honest there are sign everywhere. Notice how every series on TV now has a gay character? Not only that, he becomes the favourite character and people love it. It’s no longer disgusting to see gay people on TV. You are the disgusting and backward one if you have a problem with it. This is hard coz growing up we were taught to hate gay people and now one might be your boss or your son’s boyfriend in the future. It’s a fight I cant win, so I’m working on appreciating all people as equal and observing people’s rights to be who they want to be.

"A fool and his money. . ."

This one goes out to my fellow Jo'burgers and those thinking of making their way here. I assume that we all after the same thing, albeit that the detail description of it might be different. We want at least good quality of life. So, what is good quality of life? And does the description of this change with time?

See, a few years back, I came to Jozi looking for "le good life". I felt that I had done all I could in my little dorpie that I come from. (Yes, ya'll, Durban is a dorpie) I moved here coz this is where all dreams come true. And boy did Jozi deliver. After I got over the initial, "I miss my mommy syndrome", a new world opened to me. Everything that I complained was missing for me in Durbs was here. I was also told that people here are plastic. I don't know, I met some of the most genuine people here. The work front was great. I remember that, by moving here, I doubled by salary and its been up and up since then. The clubs here are so much more diverse than Durbs. You see, I'm a hip hop fan and in Durbs most joints play house, so I felt out of place most of the time. I came to Jozi and there were like a gajilion joints that catered for me. Then there was YFM. The DJ's were somewhat questionable at times, but they played the best stuff. Hip hop, soul, kwaito. I loved it. There's also a jazilion malls here making life that much easier.

My arrival here was just magical. That was years ago. Since then, I found myself. I say that coz, my when I met my wife, I found me. I also became a dad. An unexpected experience that changed so many things (for the better overall). I moved out of my penthouse suit in Sandton to a quaint house in quiet family friendly suburb. Now I'm more concerned about how much I spend in traffic, the rising interest rates, the declining stock market due to international slow down and fears about the bubble in Chindia. I use to be able to spend hours at the office and love the work. Now, the work is aight, I just want to get home before my daughter goes to sleep. They are building too many malls in Joburg and why does Loli Jackson have to advertise throughout Rivonia Road in Sandton for Teazers. By the way, I'm sure that the Billboard on William Nichol and Main of the Lollipop Lounge is revealing way too much ass. And no one says anything. What the?

I know what your punk ass is thinking. But seriously. Why do we leave our lovely coastal dorpies to come to the land of gold, to make money but then sit in traffic for 2 hours in traffic everyday? To live in neighborhoods where people don’t know who lives next door. Where we don’t allow our kids to easily go outside and play like we did when we were young. Where the only decent place for kids to hang out is the malls? Don’t get me started on that one. Its weird. We are raising out kids a certain way and we’ll be the people surprised when they turn out that way. Someone is going to look at your fat kid and say “What a snob” and you’ll be like “What?” But think about it. If you raise your kids in the suburbs, where you spend very little time with them coz these days Mommy and Daddy are chasing the money and climbing the corporate ladder. Who’s influencing your kids? Why do you get surprised when two thin parents produce an overweight child? How else is he gonna turn out when he sits in front of the pc for hours on facebook, then mtv for another couple of hours then playstation for the rest of the weekend. Then in the car its all about mixit. He won’t talk to you in the car coz he has his iPod earphones on. Do you know what’s on his iPod? I don’t think you wanna know. We thought Snoop was bad? Think again.

Despite the fact that the new generation may rebel at times against the teachings of their parents, they will ultimately fall back on what you taught them and showed them growing up. We complain that our kids are losing/have lost their cultural heritage. Lets think about what we chase during the day to give them versus the time we steal away from them and what we should be giving them in learnings, health and happiness in life you were given.

“Johnny Bravo tells the story of a biceps-bulging, karate-chopping free spirit, who believes his a gift from God to the women of the earth. Unfortunately for Johnny, everyone else sees him as a narcissistic Mama's boy with big muscles and even bigger hair. In short, he is the quintessential guy who "just doesn't get it."

Ahh, how many saw the major train wreck this weekend. It was terrible. Bodies everywhere, the unintended loss of life, blood everywhere, loss of jobs, the anger, and the pain. Tragedy. Pure tragic! Mm. How terrible. I thought the SABC said that they would never show such gruesome tragedy on TV, after eTV showed the beheading of that guy, live on television a few years ago. So, can you imagine my shock and horror when SABC showed us all 90 minutes of it on Sunday afternoon? They even played replays and slow motions. What kind of sick bastards are these? Have they no souls, no hearts? So early in the day when our kids could see all of this. Fire these people please. Take them away.

The rugby boys reminded the rest of the world what potential and greatness lies in South Africa. (Go Habanna! You go boy!) But of course Bafana Bafana had to remind us of all the pain and suffering that goes on in our country. A balanced view I suppose. The “boys boys” under estimated their opponents, 62 ranked Zambia before the game began. And why not? We are a football loving nation that believes a 1-0 loss to Scotland signaled great things to come. Come on, really. I wish I could send uBaba Lekota into the changing rooms to repeat the speech when he dissed uBaba Zuma last week on tv. I especially like the part when he asks, “Ububanxa bani obu?” I would have replayed that a few times. I have never seen professionals play football like my 8 year old nephew at school. Casually passing the ball back to the goalie or your teammate, even though you are the last man in line of defense. To say that those were mistakes is being very lenient. The guys are professionals and I saw 3 schoolboy errors. I then saw, the goalie, the midfielders and defense showing angry faces at each other. They were all at sea in defense and playing as if they were leading 6-0.

I’m very disappointed at the attitude shown by the national team, boys boys. These guys don’t care how it all makes us feel. This is no wonder we don’t support them when they want more money or complain that SAFA don’t care. Damn, I would care for them neither. The attitude towards playing for their country sucks. Its just sucks!!

Okay, enough of that. You know me; I always try to find a positive in everything. It was great to see uBennie waba ntwana back in action for the boys boys. Looks like the score line wasn’t making him nervous. A great goal. Typical of the striker. Look, I hate the fact that we/SAFA/Pereira had to lick his ass to come back, but he’s here, he scored, and we appreciate that. Welcome back, Bennie.

“All Animals are created equal. Some animals are more equal than others” George Orwell

Today, my ass strolled along like many other times before into a well know restaurant in Jozi for lunch my special lady. It was lunch about midday and not that busy. There were tons on black waiters and busboys. (Is busboy a derogatory term? I hope not. I just hear it all the time but somehow it just sounds wrong). Strange coz during the money hours, you know, Thursday to Saturday night, you’ll hardly find black waiters at these posh, suburban restaurants. Anyway, we sat down in this not so busy restaurant and we waited for a few minutes whilst the waiters seemed to be drawing straws on who would serve us. Someone eventually lost the argument and then had to serve us.

The bloke came casually and gave us our menus and took our drinks orders. My lady’s drink came and nothing for me. I waited patiently like the shy darkie that I am. After it was as clear as LCD TV screen, I could see that I wasn’t getting nothing. When I ask the waiter, what up? He was like, “I don’t know”. He then leisurely took my order again and this returned with it in reasonable time. We then waited forever, like a dude waits to get laid by a virgin, to get some assistance. Look by now I’m sure you can see where this story is going. You like, yip, yip, I feel you. If you white, I also know what you thinking. You like, “Hold up. I’m white and I get bad service too. It’s not a black and white thing.”

Look you right, but that’s not the point. The point is this. A friend of mine, who worked at these joints, told me that all the junior waiters get sent to serve black customers coz darkie customers don’t tip. Using my intuition and wealth experience, I’m going to go with this as truth. In that case, that’s a royal bitch. If you serve black customers like shit, then you complain that they don’t tip. Do you see a problem here? It’s a bloody vicious cycle. Black people don’t tip coz they don’t get good service. Black people don’t get good service coz they don’t tip. I’m sorry but I refuse to get crap service and then tip just to prove a point.

The other thing is that we black folk don’t like to complain. So we let the cycle continue. It’s about time we stopped going to obviously racist joints. Especially when the racism comes from our own kind. Black people, please don’t tip if you don’t get the service you deserve and don’t go quietly. Let the managers know that you was treated substandard and you shall not be returning. (Yeah, please. Don’t say that and go back two weeks later in a red cap, hoping they wont see you). Discourage your fiends from going. Its 2007 and the time for black and tolerating racism is over. White folks already do this. There’s no reason why as a black person, you shouldn’t stand up for your damn self.

“Our lives end the day we become silent about things that matter” Martin Luther King Jr

It must b said that we live in interesting times in our country. Politics are taking shape in a manner that has many of us nervously cautious. We had the country’s deputy president who seemed (and maybe still does) destined to be the country’s next president fired from office 2 years ago after being in suspicious relationships with a convicted fraudster. Then there was the sexy shower and baby oil incident. We’ve had the ANC chief whip fired this year for being a “sex pest”. He’s suing the ANC for “unfair” treatment. I mean, what’s wrong with groping here and there between boss and staff Mr Goniwe? Then the deputy minister of health was fired for taking a rather expensive unauthorized trip to Espanyol. Then the “people” say that there must be other motives coz she once spoke up against a beetroot medical aids issue. Why she should be fired for spending tax payers money against the rules to show her son around the globe. Mos, we all do it, right? What’s even more amazing is the fact that she managed to get hectic support. Oh, wait, its not over. Oh no. There’s the whole expose’ on the health minister and her drunken binge in hospital as well as the rumour that the president had her jump the queue ahead of many others to get a transplant. Shivers man. Shivers.

I know many of us are hung up on the euphoria of being part of this great country with all the awesome things happening, but when the shit hits the fan (or just before), something must be done or at least said. The leadership of this country is letting us down. We are giving our kids some difficult choices for role models. Politics are getting dirtier than ever and these are the people representing our state of mind. The man who was elected as the head of the moral regeneration program, a program designed to help this country with many problems including AIDS, that same individual admits to having sex with an HIV positive woman. Along with the shenanigans above, I can’t help but feel that we are starting to tread close to towards that path that has Zim where they are now. Oh, and those that don’t believe that Zim is in serious shit, WAKE THE FUCK UP!

Gift Leremi died today. A bright 22 year old football genius lost his life. It’s always events like this that bring things we take for granted home. Gift, despite some of the problems he had, made us all Pirates, Sundowns or whatever very proud to be South African. I would watch him play and see his confidence, his style, playing football the way we all dream SA to play. I would think, wow, this is what Bafana 2010 will look like and get goose bumps at the thought. I could hear the English commentators, “Blimey. What wos that, hey? That Gift Lere-my fella is tearing England apart. Will England comeback from 3-0 down at half time in this worl' cup semi-final?”

The Leremi family has lost a son and Mzansi has lost a legend in the making. The hope we had and the land we dreamed of when we saw Gift play is at risk. Our future is the hands of our leaders in parliament but also in each of us. When we sit and do nothing and say nothing, as our leaders let us down, is something we will all have to live with one day. Rest in peace, Mr Gift Leremi.
