“Our lives end the day we become silent about things that matter” Martin Luther King Jr

It must b said that we live in interesting times in our country. Politics are taking shape in a manner that has many of us nervously cautious. We had the country’s deputy president who seemed (and maybe still does) destined to be the country’s next president fired from office 2 years ago after being in suspicious relationships with a convicted fraudster. Then there was the sexy shower and baby oil incident. We’ve had the ANC chief whip fired this year for being a “sex pest”. He’s suing the ANC for “unfair” treatment. I mean, what’s wrong with groping here and there between boss and staff Mr Goniwe? Then the deputy minister of health was fired for taking a rather expensive unauthorized trip to Espanyol. Then the “people” say that there must be other motives coz she once spoke up against a beetroot medical aids issue. Why she should be fired for spending tax payers money against the rules to show her son around the globe. Mos, we all do it, right? What’s even more amazing is the fact that she managed to get hectic support. Oh, wait, its not over. Oh no. There’s the whole expose’ on the health minister and her drunken binge in hospital as well as the rumour that the president had her jump the queue ahead of many others to get a transplant. Shivers man. Shivers.

I know many of us are hung up on the euphoria of being part of this great country with all the awesome things happening, but when the shit hits the fan (or just before), something must be done or at least said. The leadership of this country is letting us down. We are giving our kids some difficult choices for role models. Politics are getting dirtier than ever and these are the people representing our state of mind. The man who was elected as the head of the moral regeneration program, a program designed to help this country with many problems including AIDS, that same individual admits to having sex with an HIV positive woman. Along with the shenanigans above, I can’t help but feel that we are starting to tread close to towards that path that has Zim where they are now. Oh, and those that don’t believe that Zim is in serious shit, WAKE THE FUCK UP!

Gift Leremi died today. A bright 22 year old football genius lost his life. It’s always events like this that bring things we take for granted home. Gift, despite some of the problems he had, made us all Pirates, Sundowns or whatever very proud to be South African. I would watch him play and see his confidence, his style, playing football the way we all dream SA to play. I would think, wow, this is what Bafana 2010 will look like and get goose bumps at the thought. I could hear the English commentators, “Blimey. What wos that, hey? That Gift Lere-my fella is tearing England apart. Will England comeback from 3-0 down at half time in this worl' cup semi-final?”

The Leremi family has lost a son and Mzansi has lost a legend in the making. The hope we had and the land we dreamed of when we saw Gift play is at risk. Our future is the hands of our leaders in parliament but also in each of us. When we sit and do nothing and say nothing, as our leaders let us down, is something we will all have to live with one day. Rest in peace, Mr Gift Leremi.

To The Man Himself,

You write about the stuff that people want to read about. That's a fact. I'm sure this is something your dainty daughter saintly son will one day want to read about in order to get a sense of what the state of mind might have been in our time and space. This 'note' serves as a time capsule. It is succinct and prosaic in style - I dig it (like a dog digging for bones).

Let me tell you a story (aint looking for no applause…): A friend of mine (Abraham Makutseng) and myself, would (over tea) have (such profound) conversations about politics and how with think the country ought to be. Our discussions would also touch on business ideas - and that's how he came to decide that he was going to open a dry-cleaning shop. We would talk about difficulties and strife facing the man of today and such things as improving the sex life with one's partner.

So we started this blog http://itiye.blogspot.com/ which never really took off. (partly because of the very few number of contributors, with me being the Editor!)

I believe there is a lot to be said indeed: Just the other day I was educating my fellow 'white' friend about affirmative action and the state of employment (but we spent most of the time debating why the two measures: unemployment % and % rate of employment are necessary).

Ehrr… what I'm alluding to, Comrade ... is that, it is one thing to talk about these things, and quite another to write about them. The written word injects a bit more more(to)tality to the verbal communication. It is the voice that echoes forever… and you definitely display traits of good communicator - and writer!

Like that dude said: "The cost of our libraries is negligible compared to the cost of an ignorant nation".

So, to revival of 'the word'...
